Sometimes when you’re feeling peckish, there’s nothing quite like tucking into a hot sausage roll, and for many Brits the only valid choice is Greggs.

The chain has become a fast food staple in the UK, beloved for its steak bakes, sausage rolls, iced doughnuts and meal deals.

But it seems another bakery is on the rise and set to rival the iconic brand, with some fans of the company claiming it’s even ‘better than Greggs’. A bold statement indeed…

We’re talking, of course, about Wenzel’s, which has been turning out baked goods since launching in North West London in 1975 as a family-run business.

Since then, the business has grown rather substantially, and Wenzel’s now operate in more than 100 locations nationwide — and its not slowing down anytime soon.

That’s because the bakery chain is now teaming up with Southern Co-op to launch new franchise stores around the UK.

The first of these new sites is planned for Guildford, Surrey, and is set to open in early September.

Speaking about the new partnership, Sarah Wenzel, CEO of Wenzel’s, told Grocery Gazette: ‘We’re delighted that Southern Co-op have chosen to be our franchise partner.

‘Southern Co-op is a business that has consistently put the community first, and with this shared vision of offering high-quality food for all, we’re in a strong position to bring delicious, freshly baked goods at accessible prices to even more customers across the UK.’

Those heading down to a new Wenzel’s branch are in for a treat, as the first 200 customers through the door will receive a free drink.

As well as this, the stores also sell a number of other tasty treats including cookies, doughnuts, croissants, sausage rolls, sandwiches, and pizza, with prices starting from 95p for bread rolls and £1.25 for cakes and pastries.

On social media, Wenzel’s has a strong fan base, with many praising the baked goods, claiming their food is ‘amazing’ and ‘next level’ — especially when it comes to the vegan sausage roll, which is clearly a winner.

Over on X (formerly Twitter), @KeishaAMC said: ‘Wenzel’s vegan sausage roll is better than Greggs and their doughnuts *chefs kiss*.’

@Miss_Karis_ added: ‘Wenzel’s will always be better than Greggs because Wenzel’s make fresh baguettes and sandwiches for you on site.’

On Instagram, @dmbrownviper replied to a Wenzel’s post saying: ‘Your vegan sausage rolls are the best!! And I’m not even vegan.’ While @breakfastdub thought: ‘Absolutely unparalleled in the vegan sausage roll game. Pisses all over the Greggs. Take a bow Wenzel’s.’
