Youth and student
anti-war conference a success
[ Back ]
On February 11, more than 60 youth, students, and
activists attended the "Youth and Student Anti-War Conference" at El
Camino Community College. The conference included a wide-variety of
speakers, workshops and discussion.
The
conference started with a panel of speakers, which was co-chaired by
Christen Westberry, a student from Chaffey College and Amir Ghazal, a
student from El Camino Community College. Speakers from ANSWER-LA,
Muslim Student Association, Party for Socialism and Liberation, KmB-Pro
People Youth, and Youth & Student ANSWER discussed a wide variety of
topics that focused on a struggle for a youth and student movement,
resistance to U.S. imperialism, solidarity with Iraq, Palestine,
Philippines, Cuba, and Venezuela and many other topics.
After a short break, two workshops took place. The first workshop
focused on the resistance of military recruiters in schools and
communities. Many participants spoke out on ideas, strategies, and
experience on the struggle against military recruiters. The second
workshop focused on how to create slogans and its validity in the
anti-war and anti-imperialist movement. This workshop was very
practical. Signs and chants were raised and discussed to determine what
message is most effective.
After the workshops, a discussion took place about what is being done
for the “March 20 Day of Youth and Student Resistance to Imperialism.”
Many schools pledged to take action on March 20 in solidarity with young
people and students across the nation.
At the end of the conference, Carlos Alvarez, a student from El Camino
Community College and Youth & Student ANSWER organizer, summarized the
conference and led participants in a march across campus against
military recruiters. The general sentiment of the students was strong
and militant.
All involved promised to continue the anti-war, anti-military recruiter
struggle and to build for the upcoming Global Days of Action against the
war and occupation of Iraq on March 18 and March 20.
Join the youth and student movement. Join us in the struggle!
