Jan. 20 Counter-inaugural
a huge success.
10,000 protest in L.A.
Onward to March 19 Global Day
of Action!
Yesterday,
10,000 people took to the streets of Los Angeles in a spirited march
protesting the Bush program and the war and occupation of Iraq. It was
the day of George W. Bush's second inauguration.
After an opening rally at the Federal Building with speakers, poetry,
Palestinian Hip-Hop, and live music, the march--organized by the ANSWER
Coalition and many other sponsoring organizations-- proceeded up
Wilshire Blvd through Westwood Village and back to the Federal Building.
The march swelled and filled the entire width of Wilshire Blvd.
Protestors held banners reading "Protest Bush! End the Occupation! Bring
the Troops Home Now!" and placards with pictures of Dr. Martin Luther
King Jr. that said "Stop the War! Fight the Right!" Militant chants of
"Bush says 'get back,' we say 'fight back!'" rang out throughout the
march.
The demonstration in LA received
significant media coverage, as did the ANSWER–organized protest along
the inaugural parade route in Washington DC, which, despite severe
restrictions, drew over 10,000 protestors.
Similar demonstrations were
held in San Francisco (also attracting 10,000), Seattle, Albuquerque,
and other U.S. cities, as well as in Mexico, Italy, Guatemala, Peru,
Belgium and elsewhere.
At the protest, plans were announced for a mass march and rally in Los
Angeles on March 19, the upcoming Global Day of Action. March 19 is the
2nd anniversary of the U.S. invasion of Iraq. On March 19, we'll march
through Hollywood, assembling at Hollywood and Vine at 12 noon.
Thanks to everyone--especially all volunteers--who helped make Jan 20
such a major success.
